Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) uses growth factors from your own blood to stimulate hair follicle activity and skin collagen. It's one of the most frequently over-promised treatments in Dubai aesthetics. Here's the honest picture — who it works for, who it doesn't, and what sessions and months of treatment actually produce.
PRP starts with a blood draw (30–60ml, similar to a standard blood test). The blood is centrifuged to separate the platelet-rich plasma from red blood cells. The resulting PRP contains a concentration of platelets 5–10x higher than baseline blood, with a corresponding concentration of growth factors: PDGF, TGF-β, VEGF, EGF, and others. These growth factors are injected into the scalp or skin, where they stimulate cell proliferation, collagen synthesis, and (in the scalp) hair follicle activity.
The treatment's limitations are as important as its mechanism. PRP provides a growth stimulus — it works best when there are viable follicles to stimulate. It cannot regenerate follicles that have fully died (final stage hair loss). It does not grow new hair where there was none. It is a treatment for early-to-moderate hair loss, not a cure. Understanding this prevents the disappointment that drives most PRP dissatisfaction in Dubai.
Injected across the thinning scalp in a grid pattern. Primary mechanism: extends the anagen (growth) phase of affected follicles and reduces miniaturisation. Expect shedding to slow within 2–3 months of starting. New hair visible (as fine "baby hairs") at 4–6 months. Not immediate. Sessions: monthly for 3–4 months, then every 3–6 months maintenance. Price: AED 800–1,600/session in Dubai.
PRP applied to the face after microneedling (the channels allow deeper penetration) or injected directly. Stimulates collagen, improves skin texture and tone. Less effective as a standalone injection than when combined with microneedling. Results: subtle improvement in skin quality over 2–3 sessions. Not a replacement for fillers, Botox, or laser for specific concerns. Best for overall glow, texture, and early fine lines. Price: AED 1,200–2,000/session with microneedling.
PRP injected into the periorbital area is used for thin skin, dark circles, and early tear trough hollowing. It stimulates collagen in one of the most delicate areas of the face. Results are subtle and gradual — not a substitute for tear trough HA filler for structural volume. The advantage: PRP uses your own biological material, so allergy and Tyndall effect risk are eliminated. Price: AED 1,400–2,200/session. Often combined with microneedling in the area.
PRP pricing in Dubai reflects the centrifuge quality and the concentration protocol — two clinics quoting the same price may be using significantly different systems. Ask about the centrifuge model and the platelet concentration achieved.

For patients with early androgenetic alopecia (pattern baldness) where thinning has begun but follicles are still present: yes, PRP can slow shedding, reduce miniaturisation, and stimulate dormant follicles to produce thicker hair. The honest expectation is that PRP maintains and marginally improves hair density rather than dramatically regrowing hair. Clinical studies show an average increase of 20–40% in hair density per square centimetre in good responders after a 3-session course. Patients with significant thinning who have already lost large numbers of follicles see modest results at best. For complete bald patches (slick bald): PRP will not work. Alopecia areata (patchy hair loss, autoimmune): PRP is not the right treatment.
Minoxidil (topical, applied daily) and finasteride (oral, DHT-blocking, for male pattern hair loss) are the most evidence-backed hair loss treatments available. Both have decades of randomised controlled trial data. PRP has a growing body of evidence but fewer long-term studies. For most patients with early androgenetic alopecia, the evidence-based approach is to start with minoxidil and/or finasteride as the foundation, and add PRP as an adjunct to amplify results. PRP alone, without addressing the underlying hormonal cause of hair loss, will produce limited results. A Dubai trichologist or dermatologist can assess your specific pattern and recommend the right combination.
