Modern lip fillers are hyaluronic acid (HA) gels — a naturally occurring substance in the body that attracts and retains water. They are fully reversible using hyaluronidase (an enzyme that dissolves HA), which is one of their key safety advantages over older permanent filler materials.
What makes HA fillers differ from one another is their G-prime (stiffness), particle size, and cross-linking density. A lip-specific filler like Juvederm Volbella or Restylane Kysse is designed to be soft and flexible — appropriate for a tissue that moves constantly. Using a high-G-prime filler designed for cheekbones in the lips produces the firm, "sausage" appearance that characterises bad results.
The injector's technique matters as much as the product. The same 1ml of Juvederm Ultra placed using the wrong injection map — too much body volume, not enough vermilion border definition — can produce an unnatural result on the same lips that would look beautiful with different placement.

Duck lips result from one of three things: too much filler volume for the anatomy, filler placed in the body of the lip rather than the border and cupid's bow, or a high-G-prime product not designed for lip use. To avoid this: start conservative (0.5ml for a first treatment), ask your injector to prioritise definition over volume, and request a lip-specific filler product (Volbella, Kysse, or Volift — not a filler designed for cheeks or temples).
