Masseter Botox is the fastest-growing injectable treatment in Dubai. It's used for three distinct reasons — facial slimming, teeth grinding (bruxism), and jaw pain (TMJ) — with different dosing, different results, and different value propositions for each. Here's what your clinic should tell you but often doesn't.
The masseter is the large chewing muscle that runs from the cheekbone to the lower jaw. It's one of the strongest muscles in the body relative to its size. Botox injected into the masseter temporarily reduces its activity, causing the muscle to gradually atrophy (decrease in bulk) over 4–8 weeks. Repeated treatment over 2–3 sessions causes progressive, longer-lasting volume reduction.
Aesthetic jaw slimming: In patients with a wide lower face from overdeveloped masseter muscles (hypertrophic masseters), reducing the muscle bulk narrows the jawline, creating a more V-shaped facial profile. Very popular in Dubai across East Asian, South Asian, and Arab patient groups who desire a slimmer facial contour. Results in this indication are purely cosmetic; the teeth continue to function normally.
Bruxism (teeth grinding): Bruxism — unconscious teeth grinding, typically during sleep — hypertrophies the masseter over time (the same way lifting weights builds biceps). Botox reduces the force of grinding, protects teeth from wear, and over several sessions reduces the muscle bulk that bruxism has built. This is a medical indication, not cosmetic, which matters for insurance discussions. Many Dubai patients have both aesthetic and bruxism motivations simultaneously.
TMJ pain and headaches: Temporomandibular joint dysfunction, often driven by masseter tension and bruxism, causes jaw pain, headaches, and restricted jaw opening. Masseter Botox reduces muscle tension and can provide significant pain relief alongside the volume reduction. Pain relief often appears within days — faster than the aesthetic slimming effect.
Units per side matter enormously. Masseter Botox needs the highest dose of any standard Botox area. Underdosing produces minimal results.
Dr. Chris Reuter's Abu Dhabi clinic publishes axilla (underarm) Botox at AED 30/unit. At that rate, a 50-unit masseter treatment would be AED 1,500. This gives a useful per-unit reference. Dubai premium clinics charge AED 35–55/unit for Allergan Botox.

At standard aesthetic doses (25–40 units/side), the masseter retains significant function and chewing is unaffected in the vast majority of patients. Very high doses (50+ units/side used for severe bruxism) can cause temporary mild weakness when chewing very tough foods (steak, hard nuts) in the first 2–4 weeks post-injection, as the muscle is still adapting. This resolves as the initial peak effect passes. Permanent chewing difficulty from masseter Botox is not a reported outcome in the medical literature at clinical doses.
The Botox takes effect within 5–7 days, but the aesthetic slimming — which comes from actual muscle atrophy, not just muscle relaxation — takes 4–8 weeks to become visible. Many patients are disappointed when they look in the mirror at week 2 and see no obvious change. This is expected. Photograph yourself at treatment day and again at 8 weeks for an accurate comparison. Some patients require 2 sessions (3–4 months apart) before the full reduction is visible, particularly if their masseter is very hypertrophic from years of bruxism.
The Botox effect is temporary (4–6 months). However, with repeated treatment, the masseter progressively atrophies — the muscle genuinely decreases in size because it's not being used at full capacity. After 3–4 sessions, many patients need lower doses less frequently because the muscle has genuinely reduced. If treatment stops entirely, the masseter slowly rebuilds over 6–12 months through normal chewing activity. The cumulative reduction from multiple sessions is longer-lasting than individual sessions, but "permanent" in the absolute sense only applies while treatment continues.
