Texture, scars and sun damage

Laser Skin Resurfacing in Dubai — fractional CO2, Fraxel and erbium, with honest downtime and pricing

Resurfacing lasers are the most effective tools available for acne scars, deep wrinkles and sun damage. The honest framing for the UAE: the same energy that delivers dramatic results carries a real risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation in darker skin. The right wavelength, conservative settings and an experienced operator matter more here than anywhere. Here is how the devices differ and what they actually cost.

01 — What it does

Resurfacing lasers create controlled micro-injury — either to remove damaged surface skin or to heat the deeper layers and rebuild collagen.

Every resurfacing laser works on the same principle: a precisely targeted beam of light heats the skin to create a controlled injury, and the body's repair response replaces damaged tissue with newer, smoother, more even skin. What separates the devices is whether they remove the surface layer or leave it intact, and how deeply they reach.

There are two families. Ablative lasers (fractional CO2 at 10,600nm, erbium YAG at 2,940nm) vaporise thin columns of tissue, removing the damaged surface and triggering deep collagen remodelling. They are the most powerful option for acne scars and deep wrinkles, and they come with the most downtime. Non-ablative fractional lasers (Fraxel Dual at 1550/1927nm, ResurFX) heat the deeper skin without removing the surface, so healing is faster, but results are subtler and need more sessions.

The word "fractional" is the most important concept here. It means the laser treats only a fraction of the skin at a time, leaving microscopic columns of treated tissue surrounded by untouched skin. Those islands of healthy skin act as a reservoir for healing, so the face recovers far faster than the old fully-ablative resurfacing that left patients raw for weeks. Almost every modern resurfacing device is fractional. For pigment-led concerns, this often pairs with a dedicated pigmentation treatment plan rather than aggressive resurfacing alone.

02 — Device comparison

Fractional CO2, Fraxel and erbium YAG — how the three approaches differ.

Fractional CO2

Ablative, most powerful, most downtime

The 10,600nm CO2 laser is the strongest resurfacing option, removing tissue in microscopic columns while heating the surrounding skin to drive deep collagen remodelling. Best-in-class for moderate to severe acne scars and deep wrinkles, and a single course can produce dramatic change. The trade-off is real: expect 5–10 days of social downtime, with redness that can persist for weeks. In darker skin it carries the highest risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, so conservative settings and a skilled operator are essential.

Fraxel / non-ablative

Subtler, less downtime, more sessions

Fraxel Dual (1550/1927nm) and devices like ResurFX heat the deeper skin without removing the surface layer. Recovery is much faster — typically a day or two of redness and a sandpaper-like texture — but results build gradually over a course of 3–5 sessions spaced a few weeks apart. The 1927nm wavelength is particularly useful for pigmentation, sun damage and melasma, which makes non-ablative fractional a sensible first choice for many UAE skin types.

Erbium YAG

Ablative, more precise, gentler than CO2

The erbium YAG laser (2,940nm) is also ablative but is absorbed more precisely by water in the skin, so it removes tissue with less surrounding heat than CO2. That means a more controlled depth and generally shorter, less intense downtime than full CO2, at the cost of slightly less collagen-tightening. It sits between CO2 and non-ablative options — a strong choice for fine lines, mild to moderate scarring and patients who want meaningful resurfacing with a faster recovery.

03 — The UAE honesty point

In darker skin, resurfacing carries a real risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

This is the single most important thing to understand before booking in Dubai. No brochure leads with it. We do.

Dubai's population spans the full range of skin tones, and a large share of patients have Fitzpatrick type IV to VI skin. In these skin types, the controlled injury that makes resurfacing effective can also trigger post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) — darker patches that appear weeks after treatment as the skin over-responds with pigment. PIH is usually temporary, but it can take months to fade and, handled badly, it leaves people worse off than when they started.

This risk is manageable, not disqualifying. The protective measures are well established: conservative laser settings rather than aggressive single-pass treatments, a test patch before treating the full face, and in many cases a priming routine of pigment-suppressing skincare in the weeks beforehand. The operator's experience with darker skin is the variable that matters most — ask specifically how many patients with your skin tone they treat each month.

The Gulf climate adds a second layer. Sun exposure before treatment raises the risk of complications, and sun exposure afterward is the most common cause of PIH and uneven results. Daily high-factor sunscreen and genuine sun avoidance for weeks after treatment are not optional here. If a clinic is relaxed about either, treat it as a warning sign.

04 — Real prices

Laser skin resurfacing prices in Dubai — by laser type and area.

Non-ablative courses look cheaper per session but need several sessions; ablative CO2 costs more upfront but is often a single course. Here is the real market.

Non-ablative fractional (per session) AED 1,500 – 3,000 Fraxel · ResurFX · usually 3–5 sessions
Fractional CO2 (full face) AED 2,500 – 5,000 Ablative · often a single course
Erbium YAG (full face) AED 2,500 – 4,500 Ablative · faster recovery than CO2

06 — FAQ

Laser resurfacing questions.

The honest answers, including the ones about downtime and pigmentation that most clinics gloss over.

How much does laser skin resurfacing cost in Dubai?

Non-ablative fractional sessions (Fraxel, ResurFX) run AED 1,500–3,000 each, and most people need 3–5 of them. Fractional CO2 for the full face costs AED 2,500–5,000, usually as a single course. Erbium YAG full face sits at roughly AED 2,500–4,500, and a targeted area such as around the eyes or mouth is AED 1,200–2,500. Packages and add-on skincare priming vary by clinic, so compare the full course cost rather than the per-session headline.

How much downtime should I plan for?

It depends entirely on the laser. Non-ablative fractional gives you a day or two of redness and a sandpaper texture, and most people return to normal life quickly. Erbium YAG sits in the middle. Fractional CO2 is the demanding one: expect 5–10 days of genuine social downtime with peeling and crusting, and redness that can linger for several weeks. If you have an event coming up, plan the timing carefully and ask your clinic for a realistic recovery schedule for the specific device they use.

Is laser resurfacing safe for darker skin tones?

Yes, but with real caveats. Darker skin (Fitzpatrick IV–VI), which is common across the UAE, has a higher risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation after resurfacing. The way to manage it is conservative settings, a test patch before full-face treatment, pigment-suppressing skincare beforehand, strict sun protection afterward, and an operator who treats your skin tone regularly. Non-ablative wavelengths and erbium are generally gentler choices than aggressive CO2 for darker skin. Ask the clinic directly about their experience before committing.

Which laser is best for acne scars?

For moderate to severe scarring, ablative fractional CO2 produces the most dramatic improvement, with erbium YAG a slightly gentler alternative. For milder, shallower scars or for darker skin where you want to limit the pigmentation risk, non-ablative fractional over several sessions is often the safer route. Many people combine resurfacing with other approaches — a dedicated acne scar treatment plan or RF microneedling can address scar types that respond poorly to laser alone. A good clinic will assess your scar pattern before recommending a single device.

How many sessions will I need?

Ablative treatments (fractional CO2, erbium) are often a single course, sometimes with a touch-up later, because each session does more. Non-ablative fractional builds results gradually, so plan for 3–5 sessions spaced a few weeks apart. Your final number depends on the concern, your skin's response and how conservative the settings need to be for your skin tone. A consultation with a test patch is the only honest way to estimate it.

Can I have resurfacing in Dubai's summer?

You can, but sun exposure is the main driver of complications, so summer demands more discipline. Avoid sun and any fresh tan in the weeks before treatment, and commit to genuine sun avoidance and daily high-factor sunscreen for weeks afterward. In the Gulf climate even short walks between air-conditioned spaces add up, so many people prefer to schedule resurfacing for the cooler months or around a period when they can stay out of direct sun. Discuss timing with your clinic.
