Chemical peels in Dubai — which acid, which depth, and what your skin tone changes about every answer

Chemical peels are not one treatment. They're a spectrum from a lunchtime glycolic peel to a hospital-performed phenol procedure requiring sedation. The right choice depends entirely on your skin concern, your Fitzpatrick skin type, and Dubai's specific climate calendar. No Dubai clinic website explains this properly. We will.

01 — What a chemical peel actually does

A peel removes the outermost skin layers to force regeneration. The depth determines everything.

A chemical peel applies an acid solution to the skin that breaks the bonds holding dead skin cells together, causing the outermost layers to shed. The skin that regenerates underneath is smoother, more evenly pigmented, and has increased collagen production triggered by the controlled injury signal.

The three variables that define every peel decision are: depth (how many skin layers are affected), acid type (different acids have different penetration profiles and mechanisms), and your skin tone (Fitzpatrick skin type determines which peels are safe, which require modification, and which carry an unacceptable risk of permanent pigmentation change).

The widespread claim that "chemical peels work on all skin types" is misleading. Superficial peels are broadly safe across all tones with appropriate protocols. Medium and deep peels on Fitzpatrick IV–VI skin — which accounts for the majority of Dubai's patient population — carry a clinically significant risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation that can be permanent. This is the single most important fact no Dubai clinic page currently states.

02 — The four acids

Glycolic, salicylic, TCA and phenol — what each does and who it's for.

The acid determines depth, mechanism, and safety profile. Medcare's page names only glycolic and phenol/TCA. Here's the complete picture.

Acid Peel depth Best for Fitzpatrick safe? Downtime Dubai price
Glycolic acid (AHA)
20–70% concentration
Superficial — epidermis only Fine lines, dullness, mild pigmentation, general skin quality I–VI with correct concentration and contact time 1–3 days, mild flaking. Return to work same day. AED 350–700
Salicylic acid (BHA)
20–30% concentration
Superficial — epidermis, penetrates pores Acne, blackheads, oily skin, congested pores. Best for sebaceous skin. I–VI — highly safe even in darker tones due to anti-inflammatory properties 1–5 days, dry flaking. Some clinics call this the "lunchtime peel." AED 350–650
Lactic acid (AHA)
Gentlest AHA
Superficial — epidermis Sensitive, dry, reactive skin. Melasma adjunct. Gentle first peel for new patients. I–VI — gentlest option, lowest PIH risk Minimal. 1–2 days mild pinkness. Safe before events if skin is non-reactive. AED 300–600
Mandelic acid (AHA)
Large molecule = gentle penetration
Superficial Hyperpigmentation, acne scars, uneven tone in Fitzpatrick III–VI. Underused in Dubai. III–VI: safest AHA for darker tones due to slow penetration rate Minimal. Very tolerable for first-time peel patients with darker skin. AED 350–650
Trichloroacetic acid (TCA)
35–50% medium; >50% deep
Medium — upper dermis penetration Moderate acne scars, age spots, moderate lines, sun damage I–III safe. IV–VI: requires pre-conditioning, lower concentrations, expert only. High PIH risk if mismanaged. 7–14 days. Significant crusting and peeling. Social downtime real. AED 800–2,000
Phenol (carbolic acid)
Deep peel only
Deep — mid-dermis Deep wrinkles, severe sun damage, precancerous lesions. Dramatic, one-time results. I–III only. Contraindicated in IV–VI — risk of permanent hypopigmentation. 2–3 weeks active healing. Redness persists months. Hospital setting, cardiac monitoring required. Permanent sun sensitivity. AED 3,500–8,000+
03 — The Fitzpatrick guide

Which peel is right for your skin tone — the guide Dubai clinics don't publish.

The majority of Dubai's patient population is Fitzpatrick III–VI. This changes which peels are safe, which require protocol modification, and which carry unacceptable risk. No competitor page addresses this. We do.

Fitzpatrick I – II

Fair to light skin, burns easily

Full access to all peel types. Medium TCA and phenol peels are appropriate candidates. Primary concern is sun sensitivity post-peel, which Dubai's year-round sun exacerbates. October–March scheduling is advisable even for lighter skin.

  • Safe for: glycolic, salicylic, lactic, TCA, phenol
  • Main risk: post-peel redness and sun sensitivity
  • Best choices: TCA medium for significant results; glycolic series for maintenance
Fitzpatrick III – IV

Medium to olive skin, tans easily

Superficial peels are safe with standard protocols. Medium TCA requires pre-conditioning (4–6 weeks of azelaic acid or kojic acid cream) and conservative concentrations (≤35%). Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) risk is real — if the treated area gets sun before full healing, dark patches can develop and last months.

  • Safe for: glycolic, salicylic, mandelic, lactic, modified TCA
  • Caution: TCA >35%, phenol (contraindicated)
  • Best choices: Salicylic for acne; mandelic for pigmentation; modified TCA for scars with pre-conditioning
Fitzpatrick V – VI

Brown to dark skin, rarely burns

Superficial peels are safe with experienced practitioners. Medium TCA and all phenol peels carry a high risk of permanent hypopigmentation (lighter patches) or PIH (darker patches) — the exact appearance you came to fix. The right approach for this skin type is a series of gentle superficial peels using mandelic or lactic acid, combined with at-home brightening agents, rather than one aggressive medium/deep session.

  • Safe for: lactic, mandelic, salicylic (low %), gentle glycolic
  • Avoid: medium/deep TCA, phenol
  • Best choices: Mandelic acid series; salicylic for acne; combination Jessner's only with expert
  • Key: find a practitioner with documented experience treating Fitzpatrick V–VI specifically
04 — Dubai timing

Why October to March is the right window for chemical peels in Dubai.

After any chemical peel, the new skin is temporarily more photosensitive than usual. UV exposure during the healing phase can trigger post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation — particularly dangerous in Fitzpatrick III–VI skin. In Dubai's summer months (June–September), the UV index routinely exceeds 10–11, and avoiding meaningful sun exposure while commuting or going about daily life is genuinely difficult even with SPF 50.

October through March is the optimal window for medium or deep peels in Dubai. UV index drops to 6–8, outdoor temperatures make brief sun exposure less likely to be prolonged, and the cultural calendar (Ramadan social season, corporate event season, UAE National Day) means most patients want results visible for this period anyway.

Superficial glycolic and salicylic peels can be done year-round with diligent SPF 50 application and reapplication every 90 minutes if outdoors. The "no peels in Dubai summer" rule applies specifically to medium and deeper procedures where downtime is longer and skin is significantly more vulnerable during healing.

06 — What each peel treats

Matching your concern to the right peel type.

Acne & congested skin

Salicylic acid (BHA) is the first choice

Salicylic acid is lipophilic — it dissolves in oil and penetrates sebaceous follicles directly. This makes it uniquely effective for acne-prone and oily skin, reaching the source of congestion rather than just the surface. A series of 4–6 salicylic peels at 2–4 week intervals is the gold standard approach. It is also the safest peel for Fitzpatrick IV–VI acne patients because its anti-inflammatory properties reduce PIH risk.

Hyperpigmentation & melasma

Mandelic or lactic acid series + sun protection

For darker skin types common in Dubai, mandelic acid (large molecule, slow penetration, low PIH risk) is the preferred starting acid. A series of 6–8 peels combined with a daily SPF 50 routine and at-home brightening agents (azelaic acid, vitamin C, kojic acid) gives the best sustainable result. Glycolic acid in higher concentrations can be used for Fitzpatrick I–III melasma but risks PIH in darker tones. Medium TCA for melasma requires extreme caution in this market.

Acne scars

Modified TCA or combination approach

For mild rolling scars on Fitzpatrick I–III skin: TCA cross (applying high-concentration TCA precisely into ice-pick scars) combined with a medium peel can produce significant improvement. For Fitzpatrick IV–VI skin with acne scars: a combination of mandelic/salicylic superficial peels over 6–12 months, combined with microneedling sessions, is a safer and often more effective approach than aggressive TCA. A Dubai dermatologist familiar with darker skin scars is essential for any scar treatment plan.

Anti-ageing & sun damage

Glycolic acid series or TCA for significant lines

Regular glycolic acid peels (every 4–6 weeks, AED 350–700 per session) produce cumulative collagen stimulation over a year that significantly improves surface texture, fine lines, and sun-damaged skin. For Fitzpatrick I–III patients with moderate lines: a medium TCA peel in October or November followed by a glycolic maintenance series is an effective annual protocol. Phenol deep peels for dramatic anti-ageing are rare in Dubai and require specialist physician assessment.

08 — FAQ

The answers Dubai clinic pages won't give you.

My skin is Indian / Arab / African — can I safely get a chemical peel in Dubai?

Yes, with the right peel type and an experienced practitioner. Fitzpatrick IV–VI skin (which covers most South Asian, Arab, and African patients) is well-suited to superficial peels: salicylic acid for acne, mandelic acid for pigmentation, lactic acid for sensitive skin. The risk lies specifically with medium TCA peels and deep phenol peels, which carry a high probability of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation or permanent hypopigmentation in darker tones if not performed with appropriate pre-conditioning and conservative technique. Before any medium peel, your practitioner should prescribe 4–6 weeks of a topical brightening agent (azelaic acid, kojic acid, or low-dose hydroquinone) to reduce melanocyte reactivity and lower PIH risk. Any Dubai clinic that does not raise this conversation with you before a medium peel is not adequately experienced in treating the UAE's dominant patient profile.

What is post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) and what do I do if it happens?

PIH is darkening of the skin in the area that was treated or injured, triggered by the wound-healing response stimulating excess melanin production. It is more common and more severe in Fitzpatrick III–VI skin, where melanocytes are more reactive. It can appear 2–6 weeks after a peel, particularly if the treated skin was exposed to sun before fully healing. PIH from a chemical peel is usually temporary (2–6 months) if caught early and treated promptly. Return to your practitioner immediately if you notice new dark patches post-peel — early prescription of topical hydroquinone, azelaic acid, or tranexamic acid, combined with absolute sun avoidance, dramatically shortens the duration. Do not self-treat with over-the-counter brightening products without guidance — some contain ingredients that worsen PIH in certain skin types.

How does a chemical peel compare to laser resurfacing for Dubai patients?

For superficial concerns (texture, mild pigmentation, general brightening): a series of glycolic or salicylic peels is more affordable (AED 350–700 per session vs. AED 800–2,000+ for a single laser session), has no downtime, and is safe year-round with appropriate sun protection. For more significant concerns (deeper acne scars, moderate lines, sun damage): ablative laser resurfacing (fractional CO2, Fraxel) produces more dramatic results per session than any superficial peel, though it has longer downtime and higher cost. For Fitzpatrick IV–VI skin specifically: non-ablative laser and superficial peels are both safer options than aggressive ablative laser or medium TCA peel. The honest answer is that the "right" modality depends on the specific concern, skin type, and desired downtime — a good dermatologist will discuss both options with you before recommending either.

Can I have a peel and HydraFacial in the same week?

Not immediately sequential. The recommended protocol is: HydraFacial first, then peel 1–2 weeks later. The HydraFacial's exfoliation and extraction prepare the skin by clearing congestion and optimising product penetration for the subsequent peel. Going in the reverse order (peel then HydraFacial) risks applying HydraFacial's mild acids and extraction to freshly peeled, sensitive skin. In practice, many Dubai clinic schedules run: superficial peel on day 1, allow 2 weeks of healing, HydraFacial as a monthly maintenance between peel sessions. Combining both in the same visit is not recommended at any depth of peel.
