Beard laser shaping is not beard removal. The treatment defines a precise boundary — neckline, cheek line, or both — and permanently reduces the hair follicles outside that boundary using the same laser used for body hair. The hair inside your chosen beard shape continues to grow normally.
At the first session, your therapist maps your desired line with a marker and you confirm it. For neckline work, the typical position is one to two finger-widths above the Adam's apple for a clean, natural-looking line. Some patients prefer a higher neckline for a shorter beard profile; others keep it lower. Once you're satisfied with the marked position, the laser treats only the hair outside that line.

Your therapist draws the proposed line with a white or silver marker. You view this in a handheld mirror and confirm or adjust. Bring a reference photo of the beard shape you want — describing it verbally is imprecise. This is the most important step: once treatment starts, modifications to the line require additional sessions for areas that were treated and then need to be regrown (which is not always possible).
Only the area to be treated (outside the line) needs to be shaved 24 hours before. Do NOT shave the beard itself — the therapist needs to see the existing beard boundary to work from. The clinic may also offer to shave the perimeter area for you at the appointment start.
The laser treats only the hair outside the mapped line. You'll feel warmth and mild snapping. Facial hair is coarser than body hair, so slightly more intense than a leg treatment. After each session, treated hair sheds over 1–3 weeks. Regrowth between sessions is sparse. By session 4–5, most patients have a clearly defined, clean line with minimal daily maintenance. This is the most important planning consideration. Hair removed by laser does not regrow easily. If you later want to grow your beard lower or wider, the areas treated will have significantly reduced hair density and may not grow back fully. Most experienced practitioners will advise starting with the minimum boundary you're confident in and adjusting outward rather than inward.
